In acousmatic music visual cues do not exist. Hence, the listener has to explore a terra incognita, illuminate the sound typology and the form, and create mental images, such as representations of space and time without or with little assistance from the memory base. Although such representations are generally based on memory and experience, acousmatic music rarely provides enough meaningless information to stimulate them. During the process of this exploration, a representation should not be confused with the stimulus that produces it: the notion of a "closing door" applies only to perception, not to the sound itself. Therefore, when we describe the sound of a closing door, we really mean an image or representation of a closing door that has been evoked by this sound in our memory base: a mental image. I refer to these mental images as mindscapes.   T. Lotis, Ph.D. thesis.
